Healthcare technology firm Komodo Healthcare has launched a four-in-one electronic hygiene chair to increase the dignity and independence of those with reduced mobility. The Komodo Chair combines a stand-alone toilet/commode, a stand and assist raiser, a shower chair and electronic variable height.

The Komodo allows showering and toileting with reduced assistance from carers. This will greatly help community care in an emergency period when carers are in short supply.

As countries around the global battle to control the spread of coronavirus, the UK government has put in measures to enforce social distancing, people can only leave their homes to buy food, medicine and to exercise. They're allowed to travel, but only to and from work if they cannot do their jobs from home. By conforming to these rules and staying at home people are protecting health services and saving lives.

Using the bathroom is one of the most potentially dangerous tasks we undertake in daily life. Figures indicate that more accidents and falls happen in the bathroom more than any other room in the home. Specifically, getting in and out of the bath and shower and getting on and off the toilet. Yet so little thought actually goes into providing the appropriate support equipment which can reduce that very risk and make it a safe haven, for both the user and their carer. 

We see too often that older people are taken into hospitals or care homes when they begin to struggle with everyday tasks and consequently fall into ill health, no longer able to manage looking after themselves on their own. However, assistive technology can help the elderly maintain their health and remain in their own homes for as long as it is possible and safe to do so.

Assistive technology can improve support for people living with long term health conditions and ultimately improve the quality of life for the individual and those caring for them.

As the population ages and more people are living with disabilities, it may be necessary to consider the option of moving into residential care homes to receive that care. The decision to move into a care home is often a difficult choice faced by the community today. 

This equipment is absolutely fantastic, we are finding that the members of our community are a lot more comfortable in the Komodo than the chair that goes with the care bath.

Over a six week period in November and December 2019, we were asked to introduce a new and novel “assistive technology” into the day to day running of our busy, 58 place residential care home. 

When you or someone you know needs caring for, your home may need to be adapted or you may need to get different types of equipment to make your home easier and safer to live in. It may also promote independence, autonomy and dignity for the person needing care and provide peace of mind for those caring.

Occupational therapy assists people to overcome barriers that might be limiting them from doing some or all of the activities they need or want to do for their independence or wellbeing.

30% of the UK population live with one or more long-term health conditions. For people living with disabilities, showering is no small task. ‍If you’re living with a health condition or disability, using a shower chair and commode could help you remain dignified and independent throughout your personal hygiene routine. ‍To help you find out more, we have tried to answer all your questions relating to shower chairs for disabled, rehabilitating and elderly users.

Your home should be an environment that adapts to the people who occupy it, not the other way around. However, often we see people struggling with the current facilities in their home when they have not been modified.

Standing and raising aids are used by caregivers to transfer users between two seated positions, for example, from sitting in a living room chair to a shower chair or commode.
